After receiving mixed reaction when released in 1986, Blue Velvet has gained a cult-like following and is now considered one of the best films of the 80s. Earning David Lynch his second Oscar nomination for “Best Director,” Blue Velvet features an odd mix of suspense, horror and humor that evokes the film noir genre of the 50s through a mysterious “femme fatale” played by Isabella Rossellini and an unforgettably harrowing villain portrayed by Dennis Hopper. In addition to the frequent pop culture references that Lynch has maintained through the recent re-vamped Twin Peaks, Blue Velvet is steeped in themes and symbols (insects, ears, suburbia, etc.) that audiences continue discussing well after seeing the film.
