We Were Just Playing / Wir haben nur gespielt (2018, Ann-Kristin Reyels, Germany)
This film is in German with English Subtitles.
The word “limit” often conjures up the idea of demarcation of territory, both physical and psychological. The plot of We Were Just Playing follows two boys from different worlds. At the start of his summer vacation, 10-year-old Jona must move away from Berlin to the isolated German-Czech border with his mother and new stepfather. Lonely and angry, in his new surroundings, he meets Miro, a 13-year-old Ukrainian boy who lives across the border. As their friendship grows, Jona will slowly discover the reality that's hidden behind Miro's grown-up façade. Reyels’ film examines and confronts the limits of borders, friendships, and childhood.
