Saboteur (1942) (PG)

Our Hitchcock series is back with Volume 5, The War Years. Each film will be introduced and followed by a Q and A discussion with our resident Hitchcock Scholar, Professor Joe Horine! We continue with 1942's SABOTEUR.

After establishing himself in the United States with 1940's "Best Picture" winner REBECCA, Hitchcock quickly hit full stride in the USA during World War II with his second Joan Fontaine feature SUSPICION released just three weeks before Pearl Harbor, then the wartime spy thriller SABOTEUR in 1942 followed by SHADOW OF A DOUBT in 1943. Hollywood presented one of the prime diversions from World War II for the public with around two thirds of the population going to the movies at least once a week ... and these Hitchcock classics were among the most popular:

5/15 at 7:00pm- SUSPICION: Hitchcock's first of four collaborations with his alter ego Cary Grant, SUSPICION casts the popular leading man somewhat out of character as the often mysterious husband of Fontaine, who won the "Best Actress" Oscar for her performance.

5/29 at 7:00pm- SABOTEUR: Robert Cummings plays the frequent Hitchcockian role of the "wrong man" trying to prove his own innocence in this spy adventure that famously concludes on the Statue of Liberty.

6/5 at 7:00pm- SHADOW OF A DOUBT: Hitchcock often remarked that this character drama involving an evil presence in small-town America was his own personal favorite of all his films.
